Notes About Tailoring

Stats

Character stats affect tailoring. Either your Intelligence or your Wisdom (whichever is the highest) will affect how often you get a skill increase. The higher the stat is, the better the chance you will get a skill improvement while tailoring. Also, for tailoring higher Dexterity improves your chance of getting a skill increase while tailoring.

Skins vs. Pelts

Verant is somewhat inconsistent in their use of "skin" and "pelt". For the most part they are interchageable terms - if you have a "skin", but a recipe calls for a "pelt", generally you can just go ahead and use it.

Stackable Items

When combining any stackable items in a sewing kit, don't stack them! Put each item in its own slot.

Skinning Knife

A Skinning Knife can be a very handy tool for a tailor. If you have a pelt of a higher quality than you need, such as a Medium Quality when you want a Low Quality, you can reduce the quality by combining the pelt with a Skinning Knife in your Sewing Kit. You'll get the knife back, and the pelt will be reduced in quality by one degree.

Leather Armor

Tailors can create three kinds of basic leather armor - patchwork, studded and reinforced.
The size of the armor made depends upon the kind of pelt used, not the size of the sewing kit.

Sizing Guide

Races Size Pelt
Barbarian, Ogre, Troll, Iksar, Vah Shir Large Bear
Barbarian, Elf, Erudite, Half-Elf, Human, Iksar Medium Cat
Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Gnome Small Wolf

Pelts and Skins

Wolf, cat and bear pelts drop from various animals scattered all over Norrath. They come in a variety of different qualities, though only Ruined, Medium Quality and High Quality are of any use in tailoring armor (Low Quality is used in some other tailoring items). The various 'superb' and 'excellent' quality skins and pelts aren't used in tailoring conventional leather armors, though some are used in other tailored goods.

Old World Quest Recipes

Tailoring Trophy

This quest earns you serious bragging rights, and shows that you're a Grandmaster Tailor. The components require several tradeskill disciplines, and can be made by anyone. Only the final product is No Drop.

First, you have to make four Mounted Gems. To make a Mounted Gem, combine two Bars of Velium with the appropriate gem in a Jewelers Kit. You will need to do this for each of these gems: Diamond, Blue Diamond, Black Sapphire and Jacinth. This requires a Jeweler's skill, and is trivial at less than 185.

Next, you have to make an Artisan's Seal. To make this you need one Mounted Diamond, one Mounted Blue Diamond, one Mounted Black Sapphire, one Mounted Jacinth, one Purified Mana (which requires four rubies), one Small Block of Clay and one Water. Combine them all in a Pottery Wheel, then fire with a High Quality Firing Sheet in a Kiln. The requires a Potter's skill, and is trivial at less than 150.

Finally, combine the Artisan's Seal with an Embroidering Needle in a Tailoring Kit. It is assumed that this has a trivial level of 255 - in other words, it's never trivial. The end product will have some stat enhancements, but no one knows what they are yet - based on other tradeskill trophies that have been completed, the stats will probably be STR 10, CHA 50, INT 10, WIS 10, Primary, Secondary or Ranged slots, with a weight of 0.1.

Shadow Silk

Temple of Solusek Ro, primarily Necromancer
One Shadow Wolf Pelt, one Silk Swatch and one Scroll of Gather Shadows. The product is used in various quests. Trivial is lower than 45.

Large Shadow Silk

Temple of Solusek Ro, primarily Necromancer
Two Shadow Wolf Pelts, one Silk Swatch and one Scroll of Gather Shadows. The product is used in various quests. Trivial is lower than 45.

Inky Shadow Silk

Temple of Solusek Ro, primarily Necromancer
One Shadow Wolf Pelt, one Silk Swatch and two Scrolls of Gather Shadows. The product is used in various quests. Trivial is lower than 45.

Second Rank Skullcap

West Cabilis, Necromancer only
Ask Master Xydoz in the Tower of Death about Second Rank Skullcap. He will state that he seeks a Faded Tapestry. You need to be adept at tailoring and acquire two pieces of the now destroyed tapestry and repair them. The pieces are the Torn and Ripped Tapestry, which you find off of Sarnak Hatchlings as rare drops in the Lake of Ill Omen. Tailor the two pieces together (the result is a mended tapestry, not a faded one, but it works) and hand them in for your Apprentice Skullcap - 2nd Rank.

Sparring Armor

East Cabilis, Monks only
Master Bain gives you a Leech Husk Pouch for you to fill with leech husks. Once done, you are asked to combine the skins and take the Full Leech Husk Pouch to a local tailor by the name of Klok Mugruk. He will then hand you a ready made Training Bag Husk and tell you that you need to get three Piles of Granite Pebbles and then you can tailor a Monk Training Bag for your caste. When you combine these together, you get a Monk Training Bag. Hand this back to Master Bain and he will reward you with a random piece of Sparring Armor.

Robe of the Lost Circle

South Karana, Monks only
Brother Qwinn in South Karana seeks the return of the Code of Zan Fi. It is dropped by Targin the Rock, a rare spawn in the Sol B throne room. Bring him the Code and a purple Silent Fist Headband and you will get a special needle. Brother Zephyl in Rathe Mountains wants the Idol of Zan Fi, which is in the possession of Brother Raster, who spawns in the Mino Elders room in Lower Guk. Returning this Idol, plus a Red Sash, results in a special tailoring pattern. These two items need to be combined in a sewing kit with a swatch of Shadow Silk and a Scroll of Jonathans Whistling Warsong, which is bought from the Bards Guild, to make a monk only item called the Robe of the Lost Circle. This robe is Magic, Lore and No Drop. The stats are AC 15, STR 5, STA 5, AGI 5, DEX 5, HP 50, and Wt 0.5.

Patched Gnoll Fur Bundle

Halas, any class
On the second floor of the Halas bank, hail Cappi McTarnigal. He will ask if you're a member of the White Rose - tell him you are. He will ask you for mammoth calf hides but at the same time his fellow trainer, Vsanna MacGibbons, mentions gnoll fur. Ignore Cappi after this. Ask Vsanna "What gnoll fur", and she tells you to take four patches of gnoll fur and sew them together, then take four of this product and sew them together, and finally take four of that and sew them together. Yes, that's right, a total of 64 patches of gnoll fur are required. This creates the Patched Gnoll Fur Bundle, which you can either turn into Vsanna for the Fang of the Wolf, or keep it to wear - the bundle serves as a cloak, AC 4, SvCold 5, Wt 3.0, wearable by all.
